چکیده

Using a sample of French crop farms during the 1999-2007 period, we test whether farmers’ technical efficiency under conventional practices is a significant driver of conversion to organic farming. An important issue is whether subsidies to organic farming could encourage inefficient farmers to convert. We find that the probability of conversion does depend on technical efficiency preceding the conversion, but that the direction of the effect depends on farm size. This result is found to be robust to the method of calculation of efficiency scores, either parametric or non-parametric. This study also confirms that farm’s characteristics (education, farm size, indebtedness) and farmers’ practices under conventional farming do impact the probability of conversion to OF.

Learning in Organic Farming – an Application on Finnish Dairy Farms

Organic farming technology may be relatively unknown to farmers at the time when they switch from conventional into organic farming. Therefore, experience gained over time and learning by doing may be important determinants in the efficiency of organic farming. It may also take time to reach the optimal nutrient stock of soil and optimal nutrient supply for arable crops under organic farming. T...

To determine the effect of conversion of rangelands to dry land farming on losses of carbon and nitrogen, Dryland farming areas and adjacent rangelands were determined. Popular areas in each of the treatments were determined and soil sampling was done. Treatments were chosen so that each treatment and the surrounding area (control), topography and climate characteristics are the same and the on...
